6 noteworthy facts about Perth-based knee and shoulder surgeon Dr Sven Goebel
In the 80s and 90s, my dad and I were both very active and participated in triathlons throughout Germany. My dad was a national-level long-distance runner and introduced me to this sport at a young age. When triathlon was “invented” we both caught fire, started competing and became quite good at it. This culminated in completing 2 Ironman triathlons in Germany and Canada.
There is no better feeling than the one you get when changing somebody’s life through a procedure that helps them return to normal life and activities. That is why I consider myself a “lifestyle-saving surgeon”.
In the early nineties, I worked with a renowned Orthopaedic Surgeon in Cologne (Germany) as a medical student, who taught me how to do knee arthroscopies. This ignited a passion as I had a natural skill for it, and today I still love performing knee arthroscopies.
Later on, I developed a keen interest in performing arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs but none of the Perth Orthopaedic Surgeons was doing these procedures. That’s when I decided to train with Dr Laurent Lafosse in Annecy, France for a year so that patients in Perth could have access to this type of surgery.
I was one of the first Orthopaedic Surgeons worldwide to use computer navigation for shoulder replacements. Recently, I have developed an interest in patient-specific knee implants with an advanced algorithm to restore the normal motion of the knee, as they focus on your individual anatomy as a patient. I was the first Orthopaedic Surgeon outside Europe to use this type of customised implant which has already been used successfully for a number of years in Europe. Augmented reality assistance (holograms) will become ubiquitous in the coming years and I am working on various projects to introduce this technology safely into Orthopaedic Surgery.

I carefully evaluate your symptoms and we then choose the best treatment option for your individual shoulder or knee issue. I include you in the decision-making process without pushing surgery. I give a clear guide to what you can expect after your surgery or if you were to choose to do nothing at all (natural history). In the end, you choose how you want to proceed. I will always treat you with respect and professionalism. When you leave my practice, I want you to feel empowered so you can make the best decision for your shoulder or knee issue.
I offer Telehealth appointments for anyone who’s living in the country or overseas. Quite often I am asked for second opinions, nationally and internationally.
